NM-02: Where Does Tinsley Really Live?

TeagueWe know where NM-02's Dem Congressional candidate Harry Teague (right) lives and works. He has deep roots in Lea County, having resided there since he was nine years old.

Teague attended Will Rogers Elementary and Houston Junior High in Hobbs, as well as Hobbs High School. He left school at age 17 to help support his family by working an oil field job in the area that paid $1.50 an hour, and he ended up building a highly successful oil services business from scratch in Hobbs. His company now employs more than 250 people in NM-02. Teague also served for eight years on the Lea County Commission. Teague knows the Second District and the people of the Second District know Teague.

TinsleyIt's a different story with GOP candidate Ed Tinsley (left). Tinsley, who owns the multi-state steakhouse chain K-Bob's, has long owned an expensive residence in the exclusive Las Campanas compound in Santa Fe, in NM-03. He's admitted that he uses his Santa Fe home as his operating base for business travel. So why is he running for office down south in New Mexico's Second Congressional District? Because he claims he now spends 90% of his time at his Capitan ranch in in Lincoln County, despite his well-known habit of using his Santa Fe abode much of the time.

Tinsley also competed in the 2002 Repub primary and lost to Steve Pearce, who ultimately won the Congressional seat (and now is running for U.S. Senate). Back then, questions arose about where he really lived and how he could represent the interests of the Second District if he did most of his living in trendy Santa Fe. And in the just-finished GOP primary, rivals C. Earl Greer and Aubrey Dunn Jr. also questioned where Tinsley really lives. Now, right out of the box, Harry Teague is accusing Tinsley of being an outsider. According to an article in the Las Cruces Sun-News:

"I would think that the people of the 2nd Congressional District would want their representative to live in the 2nd Congressional District. And he doesn't," Teague said Wednesday.

... "It is a relevant deal," Teague said. "I wouldn't want my representative living outside my district. If we don't ask our representatives to live in our district, next thing you know they won't even live in our state."

Tinsley argues he lives in Lincoln County, while admitting he has what he calls a "second home" outside the District:

"Our home is here," Tinsley said Friday during an interview at his Lincoln County campaign headquarters. "We've lived here for the last 10 years. We spend most of our time here. But I will say this: We do have a second home."

Tinsley says he regularly has used his Santa Fe residence as "an operating base for business travel," and offers a rather confusing explanation of his living and working arrangements:

"If I could just make a living on our ranch, our home, that would be my preference," he said. "But I've had to operate restaurants in multiple states. I've also in recent years been very active in the restaurant association. I'm traveling. It puts me on the road quite a bit.

"With my business the way it is now, I probably spend 90 percent of my time here," he said. "But it hasn't always been that way. It's been a deal where we've had to balance out a lot of other issues and obligations."

I'm sure this won't be the last we hear of questions about Tinsley's primary residence.

2008 New Mexico Primary Winners; Upset Victories for Griego, Keller, Chavez

Martin Heinrich wins NM-01 in 4-way race. Ben Ray Lujan handily wins NM-03. Still too close to call in NM-02 between McCamley and Teague, though Teague is in the lead and has claimed victory. McCamley hasn't conceded. There are a bunch of Dona Ana County precincts still outstanding, where McCamley draws his greatest support. Problems have been reported with getting these votes transported and counted so things are at a standstill. I think McCamley can still pull it out, IF he gets big numbers from those outstanding precincts. Go, Bill!

Griego Echavez Keller
Griego, Chavez, Keller: Incumbent Topplers

But what can only be called upset victories by three Dem primary legislative race challengers in Albuquerque have really made my day (and night). They're a wonder to behold, beautiful to absorb, shocking to realize. Eric Griego, Tim Keller and Eleanor Chavez victorious over entrenched, status quo incumbents! Griego whomped Paul Taylor in SD 17. Keller positively crushed Shannon Robinson in SD 15. Chavez won by a smaller, but still very healthy margin, in HD 13. And because they won in heavily Dem districts, the three intrepid change agents have effectively won seats in the NM Legislature.

Stunning. All three ran terrific campaigns. All three will bring truly progressive values to Santa Fe. All three represent victories for the people over the special interests. DFA-Democracy for New Mexico endorsed all three, as did many other folks in the grassroots, progressive and union communities. This is a BIG win for the forces of clean government and reform.

Update: Check out this post by Marjorie at m-pyre about Eleanor Chavez and Silva's hit piece on her during the campaign. Nice shots of Eleanor in her youth with Cesar Chavez and with her campaign manager, Tomas Garduno.

Clinton to Concede; Record Turnout for NM Primary? Tonight's the Night ...

... When the results of the last two Dem primaries in South Dakota and Montana come in and Hillary Clinton concedes to Barack Obama. It's now being reported that Clinton will acknowledge tonight that Obama has the delegates needed to secure the nomination, and effectively end her presidential bid. She'll be giving a speech in New York this evening, while Obama holds a huge victory rally in Minneapolis at the arena where the GOP will crown McCain at their convention this summer. His campaign will be revealing groups of endorsements throughout the day from superdelegates.

... When we finally learn whether Rep. Tom Udall will face Rep. Heather Wilson or Rep. Steve Pearce on the Repub ticket in the U.S. Senate race. A just-released SurveyUSA poll shows Pearce-Wilson in a dead heat on the eve of the election. We'll also see if a late endorsement from Sen. Pete Domenici will put Wilson over the top. Wilson would need a huge turnout in the Albuquerque area to win. SurveyUSA still has Udall trouncing Pearce 60% to 35% and Wilson 60% to 36% in November.

Nmdistricts108... When we see if a recent 11% edge in the polling numbers holds and Martin Heinrich beats out Rebecca Vigil-Giron, Michelle Lujan Grisham and Robert Pidcock to snag the Dem nomination for Congress in NM-01.

... When we discover if Bill McCamley's grassroots-fueled ground game beats Harry Teague's oil money run for the Dem nomination for Congress in NM-02. There's also a highly competitive race with gobs of money being spent on nonstop TV ads on the Repub side in this District. Will the winner be Ed Tinsley (the favorite), Aubrey Dunn, Earl Greer, Monty Newman or Greg Sowards? In a contest with this many candidates, anything can happen.

... When we learn who'll be the new U.S. Rep. in NM-03 in a fiercely fought, down-to-the-wire Dem primary contest between Don Wiviott and Ben Ray Lujan, Jr., with Benny Shendo, Jr. and Harry Montoya also expected to get some significant support. The winner of tonight's primary will undoubtedly win in November in the overwhelmingly Dem district.

... When we discover if clean government, reform-minded Dem challengers in Albuquerque area State Senate and House races can overcome the incumbent clout in races like those that pit Eric Griego vs. Sen. James C. Taylor, Tim Keller vs. Sen. Shannon Robinson and Eleanor Chavez vs. Rep. Dan Silva. And will John Blair snare the Dem nomination vs. Tim Eichenberg?

There are also many other legislative and county contests on the ballot, PRC primaries, and judicial races at the Metro, District and Supreme Court levels. A significant number of them are uncontested.

Where to Track Results
The polls in New Mexico close at 7:00 PM tonight. If the Secretary of State's website is, by chance, functioning correctly tonight, we should be able to track results there. Many county clerk websites will have county race results. Various New Mexico newspapers, radio stations and TV news outlets will also be providing comprehensive results on the air and on websites. I'll be linking to some of them later today when the results start coming in.

Record Turnout Expected in NM?
According to an article in today's Albuquerque Journal,

In the state's 2006 primary election, fewer than 181,000 Republicans and Democrats voted in the top-tier contests— a figure that represented less than 21 percent of eligible voters. Secretary of State Mary Herrera predicted Monday that the four open congressional seats this year will help drive a record turnout today.

"Voter turnout should be in the high 30s," Herrera said, referring to the percentage of registered voters expected to cast ballots today. "I'm expecting the highest turnout in history for a primary."

In Bernalillo County:

Bernalillo County Clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver said turnout is up significantly this year, based on early voting. Absentee balloting is about twice as heavy as usual, and the number of ballots cast at early-voting locations was up by about one-third, Toulouse Oliver said.

"Turnout is significantly higher for early and absentee (voters) compared to the 2004 and 2006 primary elections," she said.

Bernalillo County, the state's most populous, has mailed out roughly 22,000 absentee ballots— about 15,900 of which have been returned. About 7,500 are from Democrats, and about 8,400 from Republicans. About 17,200 people cast ballots at early-voting locations in Bernalillo County. Democrats totaled about 9,300 of the votes and Republicans about 7,900.

Update 3:00 PM: The reports coming in from precincts are mostly saying otherwise, describing light turnouts in many areas of the state. If true, it's a depressing development given what's at stake in this primary. Maybe we should start requiring people to pass a civics test before they can get a driver's license.

NM-02: Two More Endorsements for McCamley

Today Congressional candidate and Doña Ana County Commissioner Bill McCamley announced two more endorsements in the race for New Mexico’s Second Congressional District. The Ruidoso News endorsed Bill in an editorial on May 29th. United Steelworkers Local 9424 President David Carrillo announced that the Local had endorsed Bill in a letter to the editor in The Las Cruces Sun-News today.

The letter states that the Local represents “330 city blue-collar employees.” It goes on to state of the candidates that the Local endorsed that “[w]e believe these are the candidates that have shown their commitment to our state and our community.  We stand behind these individuals and put our confidence in them to lead us in the right direction, and to make decisions that best serve the people they represent.”

McCamley has previously been endorsed by The Las Cruces Sun-News, The Silver City Daily Press, The Roswell Daily Record, the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), the Sierra Club, 2006 Democratic nominee Al Kissling, Democracy for America, the New Mexico Building and Construction Trades Council, and IAFF Firefighters Locals in Deming and Las Cruces. He has also been endorsed by numerous present and former Democratic officials in New Mexico’s Second District (see www.billmccamley.com for more information).

NM-02: McCamley Counters What He Calls Teague's "Bizarre Claims"

Looks like there's one more well-connected, big-donor-funded Dem primary candidate panicking as election day looms -- because his grassroots rival has a real chance to win. At the last minute, Harry Teague appears to be trying to remake his image by assuming the change-agent identity of his challenger, just for starters. Accusing Teague of making "bizarre claims," the McCamley campaign issued this statement:

Today the campaign of Congressional candidate and Doña Ana County Commissioner Bill McCamley questioned two new TV ads of his primary opponent Harry Teague. In one ad, Teague claims that “there is only one candidate for change. Harry Teague.” This claim is directly contrary to what independent sources have said and to what Mr. Teague himself has said in recent days.

In an Associated Press article on the Congressional race from 5/23, Mr. Teague said, “When you look at who has always represented this district forever, it’s been a middle-aged conservative businessman from the east side of the mountains.”  In the same article, he refers to himself as “a middle-aged conservative businessman from the east side of the mountains.” Later on, he adds, “Harold Runnels, Joe Skeen and Steve Pearce. In November, it’s going to be me. That’s what the people want. That's what they’ve wanted for the past 40 years.”

So is Teague just like “who has always represented this district forever” or is he the “only candidate of change”? He can’t have it both ways.

“Mr. Teague contributed the maximum amount ($2,100) to Republican incumbent Steve Pearce in the last election. By his own admission, Mr. Teague is the same as Pearce, Skeen, and everyone who has ‘always represented this district forever,’ and now he's trying to be the candidate of change?” Ward said. “That is misleading. There is more change in my couch than in electing Mr. Teague.”

In another ad released yesterday, the Teague campaign claims that McCamley is running a “dishonest” campaign ad, yet they do not say what exactly about the ad is dishonest. If the Teague campaign believes there is some specific fact that is untrue, they ought to dispute it. They haven’t, because everything in the McCamley ad is true.

Teague’s newest ad also says: “Our newspapers .. Teague is ‘the best choice.’” However, Mr. Teague has only received the endorsement of one newspaper in the 2nd Congressional District -– his hometown paper, The Hobbs News-Sun. The Teague ad conveniently leaves out the “Hobbs” from the Hobbs News-Sun. In contrast, Bill McCamley has received the endorsements of three: The Silver City Daily Press, The Roswell Daily Record, and The Las Cruces Sun-News

“Our newspapers” are clearly divided over who is the best choice, and more newspapers in the District favor McCamley.

NM-02: Local Firefighters Endorse McCamley

MccamleySome candidates depend on endorsements from insider politicos interested in preserving the status quo. Others, like Bill McCamley, are most pleased to get endorsed by locals who have an intimate knowledge of the needs of their district, direct experience working with them and a hunger for positive change. Today Congressional candidate and Doña Ana County Commissioner Bill McCamley announced that he had received the endorsements of two International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) Locals: Las Cruces Professional Fire Fighters Local 2362 and the Deming Fire Fighters Local 4251.

In its endorsement, Deming Firefighters Local 4251 President Ken McFaul stated that, “It is the belief of this local union that Bill McCamley will address the needs of southern New Mexico and our country as his first priority and to the best of his abilities. As a Doña Ana County Commissioner, he established the County’s first paid firefighting staff. He is aware of the population growth of southern New Mexico and how it impacts essential emergency services and its citizens. Bill considers firefighters’ opinions important when discussing matters of home land security. Bill brings the hope of our future with his youth and ambition.”

“Bill McCamley is a stand-up Commissioner who has always been there when we’ve needed him,” said Louie Burke, a spokesman for the Las Cruces Firefighters. “The bottom line is that Bill has supported Las Cruces firefighters, and we support him.”

“Firefighters are public servants in the truest sense of the term,” said McCamley. “Their service to the public includes not only their time and their hard work, but their willingness to sacrifice their own lives for our public safety. That is the highest form of public service there is, and I am extremely honored to receive their support.”

As a County Commissioner, McCamley worked to establish the County’s first paid firefighting staff.

Within the last month, McCamley has been endorsed by:

  • The Las Cruces Sun-News
  • The Silver City Daily Press
  • The Roswell Daily Record
  • American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME)
  • Sierra Club
  • 2006 Democratic nominee Al Kissling
  • Democracy for America

McCamley was previously endorsed by the New Mexico Building and Construction Trades Council. He has also been endorsed by numerous present and former Democratic officials in New Mexico’s Second District (see www.billmccamley.com for more information).

There's still time to give to McCamley's campaign and help him keep his ad on the air until primary day. Click here.

NM-02, NM-03: Richardson Endorses Teague, Luján

Governor Bill Richardson officially announced two endorsements today in New Mexico's Congressional Dem primary races in NM-02 and NM-03. He didn't make any endorsement in NM-01, where Martin Heinrich has a double digit lead according to recent polling. What does this tell us? That the races in the Second and Third Districts must be mighty close and the candidates he endorsed likely felt they needed to convince the Governor to publicly support them as the days tick down toward the June 3rd primary. Their primary rivals are breathing down their necks.

Richardson backed Harry Teague in the 2nd Congressional District, saying that "Teague is the right person to carry the Democratic banner into the general election."

"Harry Teague is a successful businessman and community leader with moderate views who should be able to wind the general election," Governor Bill Richardson said. "I worked with Harry Teague to reinvigorate and diversify the economy in Southeastern New Mexico. I know Harry will use that experience to create jobs and represent the mostly rural communities of Southern New Mexico in Congress."

No response yet from the Bill McCamley campaign, but I have one -- go McCamley! P.S. Go check out post on McCamley's bold new ad. I also see that Mr. Heath has an additional quote from Richardson's camp about the endorsement in NM-02:

“The decision to endorse was a tough one. The governor fully supports Harry Teague, but he’s also very big on Bill McCamley, who he believes has great potential to be a political leader in the future,” Gallegos said.

In the 3rd Congressional District up north, where Richardson once served as a Congressman, the Governor endorsed Ben. R. Luján, Jr:

"As someone who knows this district well - as a Congressman and now as Governor - I believe Ben Ray Luján is the most qualified candidate and is best prepared to represent the diverse communities that stretch across northern and eastern New Mexico," Governor Bill Richardson said.

"I am also proud to endorse a candidate who has taken the high road against negative and unnecessary political attacks from some of his opponents," Governor Richardson said. "I trust Ben Ray Luján as the candidate who will stand up for New Mexico. He has worked hard on the Public Regulation Commission to serve the people of New Mexico. No other candidate can match his record of fighting for consumers, increasing renewable energy production and creating regional solutions to climate change."

Don Wiviott's campaign responded to the endorsement of Luján in a statement:

"While Wiviott has nothing but respect for the Governor, this endorsement comes as no surprise. It is well known that the Speaker and the Governor have a close relationship, and that Don Wiviott is not a political insider or a career politician. The only endorsement that matters in this race is the support of Third District voters."

NM-02: McCamley Endorsed by Democracy for America

Go, Bill, go! We're very pleased to announce that the nation's largest progressive political action community, Democracy for America, just endorsed Bill McCamley for Congress in New Mexico's Second District. McCamley is now part of the grassroots group's "DFA-List" that supports selected candidates across the country who meet certain criteria and are backed by local DFA members. The DFA-Democracy for America Meetup group is one of DFA's coalition groups.

McCamley is a big favorite of grassroots Dems in NM-02 and all over New Mexico. He's earned our respect by running a passionate, energetic and positive campaign for real change. He's conducting a creative and effective grassroots effort based on hard work, lots of personal outreach and small donations from ordinary folks. If we want McCamley to be the nominee, we have to help him win with our active financial and volunteer support. And we have to do it NOW. Hope you'll take action today and help McCamley in his campaign for the people and against the special interests that are dedicated to protecting the status quo. Please give what you can today. The June 3rd primary is less than two weeks away.

Here's the notice sent out to DFA members across the country today:

We have all seen what can happen when big oil men get sent to Washington: profits over people and $4 dollar gas -- with no relief in sight.

Big oil money can buy you a fancy car, a mansion and maybe even a private jet. But it shouldn't be able to buy you a seat in the House of Representatives.

That's why DFA is proud to endorse Bill McCamley for Congress in New Mexico's second district. This is a Republican-held open seat that we can win with this election, but Bill has to face a self-funding oil man in the primary first.

Bill is running a true grassroots campaign and has the progressive record to back it up. With your support, we'll send another people-powered progressive to Congress.

Contribute $25 today to put Bill over the top.

Bill McCamley grew up in Las Cruces, New Mexico and returned home after receiving a Master's in Public Policy from Harvard. In his first year as a county commissioner, Bill was elected to serve as the Chairman where he rewrote the county ethics policy, revamped spending for County Healthcare funds, allowing clinics to provide more services and longer hours, and negotiated a new contract with the local AFSCME to increase pay for city employees.

We need a new generation of leaders who are dedicated to getting things done for the people they represent, not pandering to special interests. Bill McCamley is ready to lead the people of New Mexico to a brighter future.

Click here to send Bill McCamley to Congress.

With a district the size of Pennsylvania, Bill has a lot of ground to cover. He is off to a great start and has already visited with folks in every county.

But Bill is up against a self-funding oil man who already put over $700,000 of his own money into the race to blanket the district with TV ads. You and I need to make the difference for Bill's grassroots campaign.

This is what people-power is all about. Join us today.

Your $25 makes the difference for Bill.

Thank you for taking action,

Jim Dean, Chair

Democracy for America is our nation's largest progressive political action community. With over 675,000 members nationwide, DFA is a grassroots powerhouse working to change our country and the Democratic Party from the bottom-up. We provide campaign training, organizing resources, and media exposure so our members have the power to support progressive issues and candidates up and down the ballot. Join us in the fight to take our country back!

NM-02: McCamley's First TV Ad Knocks Special Interest Gravy Train

Congressional candidate and Doña Ana County Commissioner Bill McCamley announced that his first television ad would begin airing in the Albuquerque media market today (see video above). Titled “Gravy Train,” the ad focuses on Washington’s failure to defend the middle class against special interests.

I really like the ad because it shows McCamley's enthusiasm and genuine emotion about the issues, something anyone who's seen McCamley speak live can certainly attest to. I also think it draws a powerful distinction between McCamley's grassroots-powered campaign, built on small donations and dedicated volunteers, and his rival Harry Teague's top-down, big donor, insider campaign. The majority of Teague's funding has come from his own pocket -- or from wealthy oil and gas interests -- to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Unfortunately, Teague has refused to debate McCamley during the final weeks of the primary race, perhaps because Teague reportedly did so poorly at a recent candidate forum. I guess he thinks his generously funded ad campaign will suffice. I hope he's wrong and that voters see this race for what it really is.

“There is a special interest gravy train in Washington, DC,” McCamley says in the ad. “Money from big oil and drug companies comes in one door, and taxpayer giveaways go right out the other.”

“This ad not only highlights why Bill is running, it clearly shows the passion and energy that he is going to bring to the general election and to Washington in January,” said McCamley campaign spokesman Mike Ward. “Voters want to see a candidate who stands up for them against the special interests, and this ad focuses on how Bill will do just that.”

The ad was produced by Fletcher Rowley Chao and Riddle, which also created the television ads for Travis Childers, the Democrat who defeated Greg Davis in Tuesday’s special election in rural Mississippi. The district is a reliably conservative district that President Bush won by 25 points.

Help Keep the Ad on the Air
If you like the ad and want to help more people see it, please consider making a contribution to the campaign. With only a few weeks left, they need to find every penny they can to get their message out. You can contribute quickly and securely online by clicking here or by sending a check made out to "Bill McCamley for Congress" to: Bill McCamley for Congress, PO Box 6552, Las Cruces, NM 88006.

E-Card: Another Way to Help
Gotta love this: The McCamley campaign sent out a piece of mail last week that highlights how Bill is different from so many politicians these days. Thanks to their web designer, you can now see it as an "e-card" and send it on to your friends. Just click this sentence to see it.  (You must have Adobe Flash Player on your computer.)

Endorsements
Within the last three weeks, McCamley has been endorsed by the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), which represents over 12,000 city, county, state, and university employees in New Mexico, by the Sierra Club, and by Al Kissling, the 2006 Democratic nominee for the District.  McCamley was previously endorsed by the New Mexico Building and Construction Trades Council, which represents over 7,000 New Mexico workers. He has also been endorsed by numerous present and former Democratic officials in New Mexico’s Second District (see www.billmccamley.com for more information).

McCamley is a Doña Ana County Commissioner and former Executive Director of the New Mexico Rural Development Response Council.  He won the Democratic Party’s Pre-Primary Convention for the Second Congressional District with 49% of the Convention delegates over his remaining opponent’s 36% in a tremendous show of strength.  Internal polling has shown McCamley leading his opponent by over 20%.
