Revealed: Domenici Retiring Due to Progressive Brain Disease
Sad news. According to an AP story, Sen. Pete Domenici is retiring because he suffers from a progressive disease that can cause dysfunction in the parts of the brain important for organization, decision-making and control of mood and behavior. The disease is said to be Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration (FTLD). A draft of his retirement statement supplied to the AP reveals that Domenici learned the disease is worsening when he had it checked in late September. Excerpts:
The progress of this disease is apparently erratic and unpredictable. It may well be that seven years from now, it will be stable," Domenici intends to say, according to a draft of remarks prepared for delivery.
"On the other hand, it may also be that the disease will have incapacitated me. I am not willing to take a chance that the people who have so honored me with their trust for 40 years might not be served as well as they deserve in the United States Senate."
... In his prepared remarks, Domenici said that as recently as April, "the disease had not progressed."
... "No cure for my disease exists, yet," he said. "But, if we work hard enough, we may be able to find a way to cure people with diseases of the brain in the future. That would be truly a wonderful thing."
In the draft remarks, Domenici also says he is confident he'll be able to serve the rest of his current term.
I've often been tough on Sen. Domenici for his political positions and actions. Right now, though, I want to express my compassion for his health problems and my hope that modern medicine can bring them under control. Whatever political views we have, I think we can honor Pete Domenici for his distinguished career in the public spotlight and extend our thanks for his decades of service to Albuquerque, the State of New Mexico and the nation.
Some milestones from the Pete Domenici's life, from his Senate website:
Personal History
- Born May 7, 1932 in Albuquerque, New Mexico
- One of five children, and only son, of Italian immigrants
- Worked in father's wholesale grocery business
- Graduated 1950 from St. Mary's High School, Albuquerque
- Earned education degree, University of New Mexico, 1954
- Pitched for Albuquerque Dukes—a farm club for the old Brooklyn Dodgers, 1954
- Left baseball to become math teacher at Garfield Junior High in Albuquerque, 1955
- Earned law degree, University of Denver, 1958
- Returned to Albuquerque, entered private practice, 1958
- Married the former Nancy Burk, 1958
- The Domenicis have eight children: two sons and six daughters
Political Experience
- Domenici elected to Albuquerque City Commission, 1966
- Elected Commission Chairman (equivalent then to Mayor), 1967
- First Republican in 38 years in New Mexico to be elected to U.S. Senate, 1972
- With re-election in 2002, Domenici became the first New Mexican elected to serve six full six-year terms in the Senate.
- Domenici has served longer in the U.S. Senate than any other New Mexican in history
"...Mr. Domenici enjoys a universal reputation as one of the Senate's hardest working, most intelligent and most intense members."—New York Times, May 1995

ABQ United Nations Association to Present Congressional Candidate Forum on UN Issues
The Albuquerque chapter of the United Nations Association of the USA and the UNM World Affairs Delegation will present a Congressional candidate forum to address USA-United Nations issues. The focus: How should the United States of America work with the United Nations to combat terrorism, reduce povery, reduce abuses of human rights and control epidemic infectious diseases?
The forum will be held on Wednesday, October 24, 2007 at 7:00 PM at the Albuquerque Mennonite Church, 1300 Girard NE (one block north of Constitution; about 8 blocks from the UNM Law School or 500 yards north of Lomas). The event is open to the public at no charge.
All candidates in the NM primary election races for the US House of Representatives and Senate have been invited to present their views of United States-United Nations issues. Since the United Nations has so many facets, each participant may select his or her own topic to discuss. However, we have suggested concentrating on controversial subjects such as:
- Enlargement of the Security Council.
- To block a Security Council action, more than one permanent member must cast a veto.
- Should the USA become a member state of the International Criminal Court?
- Should there be a permanent UN rapid reaction force?
- What role is there for the UN in Iraq?
The moderator will be Professor Mark Peceny, Chair of the Dept. of Political Science at UNM. Each candidate would speak for 10 minutes. After each has spoken, there would be questions from the audience, from the moderator and from one another. Please contact Maureen Wright for more info: 881-4536, mgwright@comcast.net.
Editor's Note: You're urged to encourage the Congressional primary candidates of both parties in your district to participate in this forum. You know what to do!

Tonight on Espejos: Affordable Housing in ABQ
From Javier Benavidez: Check out KUNM 89.9FM TONIGHT, Monday, September 24th, at 8:00 PM for a live discussion with organizers of the Workforce Housing Opportunity Act (WHOA), an effort to establish a trust fund for permanently affordable housing in Albuquerque.
This past summer, organizers achieved the placement of the bond question on the ballot to be voted on by Albuquerqueans in the muncipal election on Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007. If approved, the fund will provide more than $5 million per year (with a required match of $20 million from non-city funds) for land banking and the construction, financing, and rehabilitation of affordable housing in Albuquerque.
Issues including national housing market trends, the mortgage lending industry crisis, and gentrification have made home ownership challenging in Albuquerque's established neighborhoods for low to moderate income residents. Please tune in for a discussion about the struggle for permanently affordable housing in Albuquerque and beyond.
Espejos de Aztlan has been on-air since 1979 and is part of the Raices Collective which conducts programming on news, culture and music from a Latino perspective on KUNM 89.9FM. For more information or to submit input about Espejos de Aztlan, please visit the "Raices" link at https://kunm.org/culture/.

ABQ Mayor Chavez and Police Chief Apologize to Peace Demonstrators
Some good news. As described in a previous post, peaceful demonstrators at last Saturday's Iraq occupation protest at Kirtland AFB's Truman Gate in Albuquerque got a raw deal from members of the Albuquerque Police Department. Those participating in the protest were called names, cars parked in legal spaces were ticketed if they had certain bumperstickers, mounted officers steered their horses onto the sidewalk where people were standing with signs and other problems were reported.
As KRQE News 13 reports, representatives of the peace movement met with Mayor Martin Chavez and APD Chief Ray Schultz last Thursday and received their apologies, as well as a pledge that officers will receive additional training on how to respond to peaceful demonstrations:
A confrontation between anti-war protestors and Albuquerque police last weekend has brought an apology from city officials and a promise of more training for police, according to a protest leader.
... "There's going to be training on First Amendment rights," protest organizer Jeanne Pahls said. "We in the peace movement are looking forward to see how the Police Oversight Committee deals with this.
"We'd like to see there's some accountability for the behavior we saw on Saturday."
View the KRQE News report, which includes video taken at the protest by participants:
