Sen. Tom Udall: DHHS Grants $3.5 Million for Health Care Services in Albuquerque

U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) announced yesterday that two New Mexico health care organizations will receive a total of almost $3.5 million over five years to fund medical outreach for the homeless as well as infectious disease research. The grants are both provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless will receive $431,075 per year for five years to continue to provide free outreach and site-based primary medical, dental and specialty services to the approximately 4,800 homeless people in the Albuquerque area.

The Biomedical Research Institute of New Mexico will receive $255,846 per year for five years to identify risk factors of young, healthy adults who may develop MRSA infections. MRSA infections are caused by a strain of staph bacteria that's become resistant to the antibiotics.

“I am pleased that this funding will provide critical support for both the Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless and the Biomedical Research Institute as they continue their important work in New Mexico,” Udall said.
