Think About It: Our Real Enemies

"Our real enemies are not in some distant land. They're not people whose names we don't know and cultures we don't understand ... The enemy is a system that wages war when it's profitable ... the CEOs who lay us off from our jobs when it's profitable ... the insurance companies who deny us health care when it's profitable ... the banks who take away our homes when it's profitable. Our enemies are not five thousand miles away. They are right here at home."

Except that I don't include myself in those who see war as a positive thing. And if you believe in what's said at the link you give above, then everything would be the fault of humans and therefore it wouldn't be worthwhile to take any measures to correct the errors. Now that's cynical. It's saying humans cannot change. While that's tempting as an excuse to do nothing, I think there are many points in history that show otherwise.

I hope Mike Prysner will run for public office soon.

Great Speech... Now is the time to standup and save our Constitution... We have a government by the Corporations who have destroyed our Constitution and middle class. Thank you for posting that outstanding speech.

@Barb, I believe you misunderstood the point of the quote.

The argument is essentially that nothing unites humans more effectively than a common enemy. After the Cold War ended, there needed to be a new enemy. The quote comes from the 1991 meeting of the Club of Rome. Pollution is the perfect enemy because its implication is that humanity is the enemy of itself...think about all the travesties that were justified by the need to defeat the Soviets. Now think about what travesties could be justified by our, "need to save the environment"...

William - I think you are more than a little paranoid. You could say that about any issue. The point is, whether you believe in the effect of greenhouse gases or not, fossil fuels are filthy, damaging and in fairly short supply except for dirty coal. Why are you so against moving forward to adopt better energy sources?
