For carpooling information from outside Albuquerque, visit https://healthcarpool.blogspot.com/. The Albuquerque rally is part of the national March4Healthcare on September 13, including a March on Washington and cities around the nation.
The New Mexico event is spearheaded by a nonpartisan group of volunteers fighting for vigorous healthcare reform and the public option. The group, Grassroots4PublicOption, is led by two Santa Fe grassroots activists who were on opposite sides during the last presidential primary -- Gaye Pollitt for Obama supporters and Rusty Tambascio for supporters of Hillary Clinton.
"The timing of this rally is particularly important to show Congress how passionate we are about getting healthcare reform that includes a vigorous public option. We want to express our support not by shouting people down, but by showing our strength in numbers and speaking the truth about fixing our broken system," said Pollitt.
The proposed public option would provide a new alternative to private health insurance, similar to Medicare for the elderly. Its purpose is to increase competition and thereby reduce health care costs and ensure coverage for all. "What seems to be lost in the opposition's scare tactics is that Public Option is just that -- an "option," not being forced upon people," concluded Pollitt.
