Same Day Voter Registration Bill Passes NM House 40-27 (Vote Tally Added)
Great news. HB 52, sponsored by Rep. Jim Trujillo, received a do pass today by a vote of 40 to 27 on the House floor (see vote tally below the break). The bill provides for same day voter registration at polling locations during early voting in a general election.
“Rep. Cervantes and I have been working diligently on same day voter registration and this bill is the culmination of our efforts over the last several years,” said Trujillo. “I’m pleased that the bill passed the House with a convincing margin. Expanding access to the electoral process to all New Mexicans only enriches our democracy. As the bill now moves to the Senate, I urge my colleagues in the Senate to support this bill.”
The NM AFL-CIO, AFSCME, Conservation Voters of New Mexico, NM Common Cause, NM County Clerks Affiliate, and New Mexico League of Women Voters have endorsed HB 52. The bill now moves to the Senate. Let's keep up the pressure. Contact your Senator.
For more on this bill, be sure to see Rep. Trujillo's guest blog on DFNM.
