Help NARAL Pass Freedom of Choice Act
From NARAL Pro-Choice NM: The New Mexico State Legislature has been in session since January 20, and, as expected, choice is a heated issue. Throughout the next few weeks NARAL Pro-Choice New Mexico is committed to support pro-choice legislation and defeat any legislation that would limit reproductive rights. We hope you'll join us in advocating your pro-choice values to legislators!
How You Can Help: NARAL Pro-Choice New Mexico is focused on passing HB 256, the Freedom of Choice Act introduced by Representative Mimi Stewart on the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. This piece of legislation will remove the criminal abortion ban written into New Mexico law in 1969. The Freedom of Choice Act also codifies Roe v. Wade protections on the state level. This single bill will make tremendous strides to protect the right to choose in New Mexico.
HB 256 has passed the House Consumer and Public Affairs Committee by a margin of 5-2, and is now before the House Judiciary Committee.
Take Action: The time to act is now! If we do not pass the Freedom of Choice Act this year, we will not have another opportunity until 2010! We need you to take the following steps to make sure we get the job done:
Call your State Legislators and ask them to support HB 256. Even our closest allies need to hear from their constituents who are in favor of the Freedom of Choice Act. The Capital Operator can be reached at 505.986.4300. Your legislators are crucial to our success, which means your phone call is crucial.
We need as many volunteers as possible to help reach our membership and expand our capacity. As long as you have a phone and a computer, you can phone bank from the comfort of your own home. We will also be running phone banks from our office on Sundays from 1-4. Volunteer to Phone bank by contacting Chris Salas at csalas@prochoicenm.org.
Talk to your friends and neighbors about why the freedom of choice is important to you. These can be difficult conversations, but the more we talk about being pro-choice the more hearts and minds we win.
Thanks for your support! Chris Salas NARAL Pro-Choice New Mexico
