Keep the Pressure On to Save the UNM North Golf Course
Hundreds gathered at the University of New Mexico Law School last Sunday to protest turning UNM's North Golf Course into a "retirement village." They later met with UNM President David Schmidly to express their views. See KOB-TV's coverage and this Flickr group for photos. To keep the pressure on the UNM Regents and others to see the short-sighted nature of their proposed plans for the largest green space in central Albuquerque, please write some letters NOW.

Why isn't anybody talking about the tremendous waste of water that golf courses are and the fact that everybody else in our City is asked to be so conservative of our precious water resources? Isn't this area mostly a "liberal" community where lots of environmentaly minded people live? Or are they only concerned about their own precious front window views and property values?!

Any "retirement village" would use as much if not more water than the current golf course. And the golf course could easily be modified to use way less water. Maybe the best use would be to turn the whole parcel into open space with a much more natural ecosystem allowed to develop within it. This is the LAST big piece of open land in central Albuquerque. It must be preserved!
