Iraq Occupation Quotes of the Day

From an article by Michael Hirsch, Newsweek:

Under Petraeus’s plan, a U.S. military force of 160,000 or more is setting up hundreds of “mini-forts” all over Baghdad and the rest of the country, right in the middle of the action. The U.S. Army has also stopped pretending that Iraqis—who have failed to build a credible government, military or police force on their own—are in the lead when it comes to kicking down doors and keeping the peace. And that means the future of Iraq depends on the long-term presence of U.S. forces in a way it did not just a few months ago. -- [emphasis mine]

Meanwhile, Politico.com lays out the new strategy planned by Senate Dems to call for a U.S. troop exit by the end of March 2008 and limit Bush in other ways. The proposal by Biden and Levin would also:

... restrict U.S. military efforts in Iraq to training and logistical support for the Iraqi army, counterterrorism operations and securing the Iraqi borders, especially with Iran and Syria, said the Democratic insiders, who would speak only on the condition of anonymity as the drafting proceeds.

Senate Democratic leaders have not decided when to formally introduce the new measure, which, if enacted, would restrict the president's authority to conduct military operations inside Iraq.

... The Biden-Levin resolution would supersede the use-of-force resolution for Iraq passed by Congress in October 2002. And it would require Bush to seek new authorization from Congress to send more combat troops to Iraq, or make any other dramatic changes in the nature of the U.S. military mission there.

It's seems clear that Bush will try to get as much of the escalation in place before Congress can act to stop him. Let's hope Dems in Washington start acting decisively more than talking endlessly ....

The only definitive answer to Bu$h/Cheney and their against the will of the American people escalation is impeachment, it sure would be refreshing if the Dem's had the backbone to stand up and tell Bu$h that in no uncertain terns. How much more obvious must it get that Bu$h continues to give American's and the Congress the finger before they act???

I agree VP. They go round and round but won't face the fact that this criminal in the White House won't listen to anyone or anything. He needs to be called out on his crimes and stopped the way most criminals are stopped - by the law.

Impeachment can pave the way to regime change before it is too late.
Even if the Dems DO win the whitehouse in 2 years the power of the executive has been disproportionately expanded. Would the next President of either party serve to curtail his/her power? Doubt it.
Impeachment with teeth would serve to put those next in line for power by law. It would send a clear message that there are limits to our money and tolerance of excessive waste and corruption.
Bushco usurped so much power that we can expect the next party that takes power to also weld absolute unconstitutional powers.

I think one thing America as a whole needs to realize is that Bush and Cheney have killed all of America's credibility. We went from being a respected super power to being the punk-kid (no offense to real punks) of international politics.

When Bush was pushing for the war, he was pointing out Saddam's lack of cooperation with the weapons inspectors. Saddam, though very reluctantly, agreed to be more cooperative when the US started flexing its muscles. The inspectors found nothing, and Bush still decided to launch a full scale invasion and occupation.

How is this going to look for Iran, North Korea, and any other country we're supposedly trying to negotiate with? It's like, "throw down your arms so you're easier to kill!" Not only that, but consider this: the CIA warned Bush that Iraq was not worth invading- they were not currently a real threat, and invading Iraq would stretch our forces too thin to respond to any other emergency.

Iran and North Korea know that, too... and they couldn't be happier.
