It's a Start

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have sent a letter to President Bush saying "surging forces" in Iraq is a failed strategy and calling for phased redeployment instead. -- Headline at CNN.com at 11:31 AM....

Reuters has this to say:

"Adding more combat troops will only endanger more Americans and stretch our military to the breaking point for no strategic gain," Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid and House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote in a letter to Bush as he prepares to outline a new Iraq strategy.

"Rather than deploy additional forces to Iraq, we believe the way forward is to begin the phased redeployment of our forces in the next four to six months, while shifting the principal mission of our forces there from combat to training, logistics, force protection and counter-terror," Reid and Pelosi wrote."

The new website for Speaker Pelosi (ain't it grand to say that) has the complete text of the letter.

Here's the latest CBS News poll that shows where Americans stand on Bush's folly and the new Dem Congress:

BUSH'S JOB APPROVAL RATING:
Approve: 30
Disapprove: 63

BUSH'S JOB HANDLING IRAQ :
Approve: 23
Disapprove: 72

FEELINGS ABOUT NEW CONGRESS:
Optimistic: 68
Pessimistic: 25

WANT NEW CONGRESS TO CONCENTRATE ON:
War in Iraq: 45
Economy/Jobs: 7
Health Care: 7
Immigration: 6

ON IRAQ, EXPECT DEMOCRATS IN CONGRESS TO:
Increase U.S. troops: 12%
Keep same number of troops: 8
Decrease U.S. troops: 35
Remove all U.S. troops: 36

Gallup Fights for a Fair Wage--and a Fair Fight

From NM ACORN:
After collecting hundreds of signatures from Gallup, NM voters to place a minimum wage proposal before the voters, wage activists in Gallup will be fighting for a fair vote on Tuesday. The Gallup City Council will vote Tuesday, January 9, at 7:00 PM on whether or not to place one proposal before the voters or the fair wage proposal and a bogus alternative.

The fair wage proposal would raise the minimum wage 60 days after passage to $6.75 and then to $7.50 by 2008. The wage will rise annually with the cost of living. The City Council may confuse the issue by including a watered-down version, backed by the Chamber of Commerce, on the same ballot. (The Chamber did not collect signatures to put their proposal before the public.) If both proposals are approved by the voters, the one with the most votes would become law.

Come to the Gallup City Council Hearing on Tuesday and demand a fair up or down vote on the fair wage proposal!

Call your Gallup City Councilor, and tell them not to support the Chamber's dirty tricks by including a wage proposal backed by minimum wage opponents.

Mr. William Nechero, (505) 863-1220, council1@ci.gallup.nm.us

Mrs. Mary Ann Armijo, (505) 863-1220, council2@ci.gallup.nm.us

Mr. Patrick Butler, (505) 863-1220, council3@ci.gallup.nm.us

Mr. Frank Gonzales, (505) 863-1220, council4@ci.gallup.nm.us

The hearing will be held at City Hall, 110 West Aztec Avenue.

Meanwhile, Nancy Pelosi, the first woman ever to serve as Speaker of the House, took the gavel this morning. She'll have her hands full riding herd on all those Dem cats. So will we.

Foiled Again - Open Thread

News interrupted. I've been gone again since my New Year's post, hit with the nasty sore throat - chest cold bug that has been traveling through the state -- perhaps riding on the backs of snowflakes. You never know. Anyway, given that complication to my ongoing recovery from meningitis, don't be surprised if posting is light or nonexistent for awhile yet.

I'll make this an open thread so people can make announcements or discuss what's on their minds in the comments section. How are things going out there in your part of SnowWorld?

Maggie Toulouse Named Bernalillo County Clerk

Congratulations to Maggie Toulouse, who was appointed Bernalillo County Clerk to fill the rest of the term vacated by Mary Hererra, our new Secretary of State. Toulouse was chosen by the Bernalillo County Commission from among a dozen candidates. Toulouse was recently the Southwest campaign manager for the League of Conservation Voters. She was sworn in on January 2nd. You can read more about Toulouse in her recent guest blog on DFNM. KRQE News has some video and photos.

According to an Albuquerque Journal article,

Bernalillo County commissioners voted 3-2 in favor of her appointment. Favoring Toulouse were Deanna Archuleta, who made the nomination, as well as Teresa Córdova and Michael Brasher. Alan Armijo and Tim Cummins voted for Assistant City Clerk Kelli Fulgenzi for the job.

Toulouse said she intends to seek election as clerk in 2008. In the meantime, she said, she would run the clerk's office with "integrity, honesty and fairness."
