Open Letter to KOAT-TV News and Larry Barker
As reported in an earlier post today, the Raw Story blog broke a story on Rep. Heather Wilson (NM-01) today that included scans of a police report about her husband, Jay Scone, that was filed with APD. As I said, I had done a post here on October 3, 2006 based on a video of a KOAT-TV news story by investigative reporter Larry Barker that I had found uploaded at YouTube. It details how Heather Wilson removed a file on her husband from the general file system of the NM Department of Children, Youth and Families three days after she took office as the agency's Secretary. Wilson lies on camera to Larry Barker, denying she took the file. Later, when she learned the story would be aired, she admitted she took the file.
It appears that the video was removed from YouTube around the time the Raw Story post went up. YouTube put up a statement saying it was removed due to "copyright infringement."
I'm asking KOAT-TV News: Why did you demand that the video be removed by YouTube, if it was in fact done by you?
I think the voters should have access to legitimate, broadcast news stories having to do with Heather Wilson's credibility. Why ask that the video be taken down now? And why has this story not been mentioned by you in this election cycle, especially given the tainted accusations being made by the Wilson campaign and the Republican Party of NM against Dem challenger Patricia Madrid?
Just in the last couple days I have received four color mailers from the State Republican Party that accuse Madrid of, among other things, stinking like used baby diapers. I'm not kidding, they've devolved that much. Isn't it the role of the media to provide as complete a picture as possible of the credibility of candidates? While local TV and print media have been more than willing to mention empty and very personally negative accusations made by Wilson and the Republicans about Madrid, this story of Wilson's dishonesty has been completely neglected. And now now it's apparently being kept from further public scrutiny under the guise of "copyright infringement." What gives?
Editor's Note: If readers out there would like to contact KOAT-TV about their actions, visit their website for contact info.

You would think KOAT would want to run something on this given the Foley scandal and Wilson's connections with it.
Posted by: Old Dem | Oct 19, 2006 7:20:15 PM
I wouldn't hold my breath for KOAT to respond. Obviously they don't want this seen during election time. Can you imagine if the story was about a Democratic candidate? There would be 24/7 coverage all over like they did with Howard Dean and the faked coverage of his "scream."
Posted by: I Vote | Oct 19, 2006 11:55:32 PM
Oh this is a nonstory to KOAT, the Journal and others. After all, Wilson merely lied on camera when Barker showed her a file card indicating the file was removed on her orders. Then she had to change her story about the file describing an incident about her husband and a minor. I think it is important with Wilson serving on the Page Board and the protect youth caucus with Foley. Does it show a pattern of Wilson covering up for these types of incidents?
Imagine if a Democrat was the one involved in all this.

The nature of the accuser's allegations -- she said Sherwood gave her "facial lacerations, bruises about the head, neck and other portions of her body, head injury, injuries to her teeth, mouth and gums, back and neck strain, injuries to her scalp" -- makes it more than a distraction. Sherwood continues to deny abuse after reaching the secret settlement. The president otherwise kept his talk in the comfortable realm of terrorists and taxes.

Bringing our fellow Americans to a greater understanding of the evils of a government-dominated society and the virtues of a free society has always been difficult and frustrating work. It's no wonder that Albert Jay Nock likened it to Isaiah's job. People are easily misled by promises of government salvation, especially when they are consumed by fear for their physical safety or their economic security. Making matters even more difficult is the state's co-optation of a large number of people who have discovered that in the United States the rise of Big Brother offers enormous opportunities for personal enrichment – fascism's greatest advantage over socialism.

The potential for making off with such loot has long been appreciated in connection with the military-industrial-congressional complex (MICC), and recent years have witnessed another great bonanza there. Between the fiscal years 2001 and 2006, Department of Defense (DoD) outlays, excluding payments to military personnel, increased from $217 billion to $366 billion, or by 69 percent (49 percent after the DoD's generous allowance for inflation). Nearly all of this money finds its way into the pockets of the owners, employees, and suppliers of military-contracting companies. We are not likely to win many converts to the cause of liberty in this crowd.
The report cited "red flags" associated with Cunningham's pet earmarks, and said committee staff were unable to conduct appropriate oversight over a Cunningham-backed counterintelligence project at an unspecified agency because project staff were reluctant to share negative information with the committee and committee staff were unwilling or unable to follow up on negative agency feedback when it was provided.

A Marine died "from enemy action" in Anbar Province today. The U.S. military also reported that an American soldier died "from wounds sustained during enemy action" yesterday in Anbar Province. Another was killed in Baghdad when gunmen attacked his patrol on Wednesday, and an MP in Balad was killed by a roadside bomb blast. Also, this morning three U.S. soldiers were injured when a roadside bomb on Baghdad’s Al-Jomhouriya Street blasted their tank.
In Baghdad, 27 bodies were discovered in various parts of the city this morning. In the Ghandeer district, four people died and 13 were wounded after a booby-trapped car exploded. In the Doura district, a roadside bomb targeting a police patrol killed three policemen and two civilians; nine civilians and three policemen were also wounded. Another roadside bomb and a car bomb in the New Baghdad area were used in an attack on a police patrol; one civilian died and five others were wounded, including a policeman. A pair of roadside bombs outside the Iraqi National Theatre in central Baghdad wounded two people. In a separate incident, gunmen attacked a police station, killing four policemen and wounding 10 civilians. Gunmen also killed an employee of the Ministry of Higher Education in downtown Baghdad. I emailed the KOATV news director and she said it was their right not to allow the video on youtube because no one had asked for copyright approval. I find this odd to say the least. If you look at youtube there are thousands of videos up from newscasts because they know it brings more attention to the stories and people often go back to the source for more. Mr. Barker
It is all find and dandy that your TV station and others report the "average" price per gallon of gas. Just today on channel 10, they were talking about highly traveled areas, which supposedly has higher gas prices and then go to smaller areas and the price per gallon drops drasticly...I don't think so...someone really need to check into the towns of "ROSWELL, DEXTER, HAGERMAN, AND ARTESIA", NEW MEXICO. This has become a joke! While everyone is reporting barely $4.00 a gallon, these ares are PRICE GOUGING!!! We are at $4.25 per gallon. Someone really needs to take an interest in these areas!!!
