Sunday Bird Blogging: Rocky Mountain High

Dscn1603

Yes, it's true. We took Bosco the peach-faced lovebird and Sunny the sun conure with us on our vacation last week up to central Colorado. They both have a small backpack carrying case (above) for traveling, and we also carted along a larger abode for each  of them for hanging out at our cabin. During one of our trips into Salida, we stopped for pizza with them and enjoyed it outside at a picnic table as a rainbow provided a perfect backdrop for the end of a perfect day.

Both birds visibly enjoyed traveling. Besides keeping their curious eagle eyes (so to speak) on the passing scene whenever we took rides in the car, both Sunny (above) and Bosco (below) loved to be out in the mountains, beside streams or in the aspen groves, grooving. So did we. (Click on photos for larger versions.)

Gerald Durrell's commments aside (about releasing animals into the 'wilds')what prevents them from deciding the pines are greener on the other side?

First off, their "flight feathers" have been trimmed. These are the tips of the longer feathers that provide much of their loft. Second they have bonded with us and are very attached. They are persistent in trying to get onto us, not away from us. Third, parrots are more inclined to climb than fly for most of the day.

For instance, Sunny hangs out most of the day on his cage, not in it. He climbs about, hangs upside down, climbs all over toys and up and down ropes, etc. He especially likes to hang by one foot, especially if anyone is watching. He's also often seen standing on one leg, holding a piece of fruit, nut or seed in the other foot so he can munch on it.

He rarely takes flight except when he's startled by something. And since his flight feathers are trimmed, he merely flutters to the floor softly if that happens.

By the way, Bosco and Sunny were domestically bred by responsible breeders, not taken from the wild. That's why they're so healthy and smart!
