Report on Take Back America Conference

Editor's Note: Many of you will remember Matt McMillan from the Miles Nelson for Congress campaign. He also was a founding member of Tidewater for Dean during the presidential primay campaign. He's now working in DC and it was great to get this from him.

I got to watch several of the main speeches from the conference on CSPAN, including great ones by Howard Dean, John Edwards and Kim Gandy. Edwards' populist barnburner about poverty, a living wage and more was especially powerful. It's terrific to hear a Democrat talking like a real Democrat and stressing that our Party is traditionally a voice for those who have difficulty developing one, not for monied special interests. You can read, hear or see video of most of the major speeches at the CFAF site.

Greetings NM Friends,

My organization, Campaign for America's Future, just concluded our annual Take Back America Conference.  I was fortunate enough to conduct FutureCasts - online radio broadcasts - with a number of leading progressives including George Lakoff, Katrina vanden Heuvel (Editor, The Nation), and others. Click to check it out. Also, check out more coverage  from the conference.

Hope you all are doing well - and enjoy!

Best, Matt

Sunday Baby Bird Blogging

The oldest of the three surviving baby parakeets started getting up on a little perch within the nestbox and gazing intently at the world outside this week:

In the shot below you can see the difference in development among the chicks and with their albino mama:

(Click photos for larger images.)

We are a little worried about the smallest chick on the left. As you can see, its feathers are still not in and it seems to be growing slower than the older two did. However, when we take the chick out, it's very strong and energetic, pushing against us and crawling about. We checked with some experts this week and they suggested we add a supplement to the parakeet seeds that Whitey eats and then feeds to the chicks. We hope it does the trick!

For the past couple of days the oldest chick, who at least for the moment is known as Ham Bone, was climbing up into the nestbox entry hole and stretching out to taste the cage and box. Yesterday we decided to take him away from mama and try him in his own cage since he was eating seeds on his own. Big step! We're happy to report It's been a huge success and Ham Bone even got up on his perch by himself this morning and started cleaning his feathers and singing with the grown-up parakeets. It's just amazing to compare what he looked like just 4 weeks ago with how beautiful he looks today.

I'll try to get a photo up of Ham Bone in his new cage later today. In the meantime, you can see some earlier photos of the baby parakeets here.

Study in LA Counters Many Myths About Living Wage

The Southwest Organizing Project's SWPOblogger has posted the results of a recent study of the effects of a Living Wage ordinance in Los Angeles. Contrary to the undocumented and rather hysterical jive talk that emerges from the likes of City Councilor Sally Mayer (MAY-YAY'), as well as many Dems, the study found that the law resulted in raised pay for nearly 10,000 jobs with minimal employment loss. The study, funded by the Ford Foundation, also reports that nearly 70 percent of workers affected by the law are low-income and only 4 percent are teenagers.

YOUR BERNALILLO COUNTY PARTY NEEDS YOUR HELP!!!

From Terri Holland, Executive Director, Democratic Party of Bernalillo County:

We need 20 electronic roasting pans to keep the chili warm at our Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, June 18th.  We would need to have them dropped by the county Headquarters before Friday the 17th at 130 Alvarado NE, Suite 400 between 8 AM and 5 PM (or we can pick them up at your home).  Please call me at 256-1855 and let me know if you can help.  The environmental department insists that we use either roasting pans or NSF approved crock pots.  If you have either one - we would be so grateful.  They would be available for pickup the following Monday.

We also are in need of a copier, a fax machine, enclosed storage shelves, several side chairs for an office, copy paper,  coffee pot, microwave and smaller regular refrigerator or dorm type refrigerator.  If you have any of these items to spare please call.

We are now at the headquarters 5 days a week, 8 am until 5 PM.  Stop by anytime, I'd be happy to visit with you. Thank you.
