Debbie O'Malley Withdraws as Albuquerque Mayoral Candidate

Email from Debbie O'Malley today:

Dear Friends and Supporters:
I made the decision today to withdraw my candidacy for Mayor of Albuquerque. After careful consideration of the number of $5 qualifying contributions I've collected as of this morning and the time left to continue my efforts, I've determined that it's unlikely I will qualify for public financing.

I extend my deepest gratitude to you -- my supporters, volunteers, campaign staff, friends and family -- for the seed money, in-kind donations, time and energy you have given to my campaign. I am most grateful for the enthusiasm with which you welcomed my candidacy and I've been honored to be your candidate.

I encourage you to continue to be involved in this important mayoral election and to consider helping other candidates qualify for public financing before the March 31 deadline. I believe strongly that the citizens of Albuquerque deserve a choice for mayor and hope that the remaining candidates are successful in their efforts to obtain public financing.

I will have staff and office hours through the end of March. For those of you with outstanding $5 books, please drop those by so that I can turn them in as required by City regulations. For any of you who would like to say,"hi," I'll be here on Thursday evenings and midday on Saturdays.

I look forward to working with all of you as I continue representing District 2 for the remainder of my term.

Thank you for your friendship and support!
Debbie O'Malley

It is very unfortunate that the general public has low info on City Council, the hard work and endless hours our elected reps do for practically no pay and plenty of grief and aggravation.

I learned from door-knocking the last couple of cycles for City Council that few people even know who their rep is much less what they have done.

It is very costly to raise awareness, get name ID, from that position, no matter if one is or has been President of the Council, as both Debbie and Michael have been.

This is a sad reality that makes it very difficult to take on an entrenched mayor, for example.

There is a lot of re-trenching that must be done, just to get into the game.

I want to thank Debbie for taking on this task. She is an outstanding elected official, and she works for the good of us all.

It is because we have ethical officials like Debbie that change has come. It will not go away.

THANK YOU Debbie.

I second what bg says. Debbie is an outstanding public servant and deserved to be in this race for keeps. The progressive community needs to do much better to support the efforts of candidates like her!
