(Updated) Tom Udall on Possible Senate Run: Two Weeks to Decide

UPDATE: See more video of Rep. Udall speaking at the SCC meeting in my Monday post.
*********
Rep. Tom Udall (NM-03) spoke to New Mexico Democrats yesterday at the Party's State Central Committee meeting at Smith-Brasher hall at CNM in Albuquerque. Bottom line: Udall will take another two weeks to listen to what the people and his family have to say, and weigh the pros and cons of giving up his secure U.S. House seat in Northern New Mexico before making a decision on entering the 2008 U.S. Senate in New Mexico (video above).

Udall (R) had many conversations with Dems at the meeting

Udall spent a lot of time mingling and listening to what Democrats at the meeting had to say about the possibility of his entering the race. Many of them were urging him to step right in, no doubt about it.

Part of the Run, Tom, Run brigade greets Udall

Udall entered the hall to a standing ovation, loud chants of "Run, Tom, Run" and a multitude of waving signs urging the same. His speech touched on many of today's hot button issues including Iraq, supporting our troops by getting them out of harm's way, protecting civil liberties, holding the telecoms accountable for warrantless surveillance and providing expanded children's health care. He emphasized that we need 60 votes in the Senate to overcome filibusters on bills that the U.S. House has been passing  on matters like ending the war and regaining and preserving our Constitutional rights. It certainly sounded to me like he was leaning towards running to take back the seat held for so long by Pete Domenci, and helping to make that 60 vote majority a reality in the Senate.

More Run, Tom, Run during Udall's speech

I'll be writing much more about the business conducted at Saturday's SCC meeting and the rousing speeches of candidates for the U.S House and Senate, as well as posting more video and photos. Today's my partner's birthday, however, and we'll be celebrating that first and foremost! Check back later today and tomorrow for more coverage as time permits.

Click on photos for larger images. All photos and video by M.E. Broderick, who's NOT a professional but does pretty darn good with a small digital camera's limited capabilities. We're hoping to get a real video camera soon but, in the meantime, the less than top-notch quality of the video will have to suffice.

Did anyone else notice how most of the people cheering for Marty Chavez's speech and holding his signs weren't SCC members? He brought most of them with him to the hall just to make it look like he had strong support. Same old same old.

Udall was great on Saturday. So was Martin Heinrich, Don Wiviott, Jason Call, Jon Adams, Hector Balderas, Joseph Cervantes, Al Kissling, Bill McCamley, Lujan Grisham and many more. What a great crop of announced and potential Democratic candidates we have. Very exciting.

I told Tom that I wanted him as my Senator, not Bill or Marty. I sure hope he runs!

My guess is that 1/3 to 1/2 of the people with Marty signs were delegates, but what do you expect? Of course he sent people to the SCC meeting. Don't worry. Tom saw what we did, and he also reads the same polls.

Run Tom Run!!

I thought it was velly interesting that so many of the people helping with the Udall appearance and draft thing were folks we know from Richardson's runs for governor and now president.

A new poll of potential general-election match-ups in the U.S. Senate race finds that Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chávez has gained a lot of ground in the last month." -- Heath H. Site.

I believe that all CCC members are able to vote in the Pre Primary not just SCC... right? Also in order to vote by proxy the CCC member must first show up and then sign their proxy over at the meeting... right?

Wow again with the attacks on a hispanic candidate and those who support him. Guess it never ends here huh? I wonder did anyone even ask if there was a quorum present. I mean I saw alot of badges that said guest. Interesting also that a majority of the folks that want Tom to run for the Senate are also individuals who have also shown an interest in running for the position themselves.

I'm really sick of reading comments like the one above about "attacking hispanic candidates." This website and the commenters on it have praised as well as criticized many Hispanic candidates and causes. Just because most Democrats can't stand Marty Chavez because of things he'd done while in office doesn't mean it has anything to do with his being Hispanic or not. When a politician takes anti Dem positions, backs and hires Republicans and acts like a bully and a thief it's not surprising that many in his party don't support him for higher office.

According to complainers like the one above I guess everyone should support only candidates who are Hispanic- never mind what they do or say. This point of view reminds me of Bush people saying you have to support the Iraq war or you're not patriotic.

I vote for candidates based on their positions, personalities, integrity and effectiveness not their ethnic background.

I Vote: I would be shocked to see this website actually support a Hispanic candidate who may not agree with every platform issue that this organization. I have only seen this organization tear down Hispanic candidates and at times from what I have seen support those who don't really do anything to further this organizations cause. I have most of the hispanic candidates who this organization supports patronize you and lead you into a false sense of hope for your issues. Funny thing is where you make your stand the most and these hispanic candidates supposably stand with you they never seem to be around or outspoken regarding an issue. The only Hispanic candidate who has held true with this organization again and again and makes his opinons public in my opinion is Jerry Ortiz y Pino. He is the only true hispanic progressive that sticks to his guns and never compromises. For that I respect the man although he may not agree with me I respect him. Now with that being said I would like to see that kind of respect from people in this organization about other hispanic candidates.

The commenter above keeps repeating lies and is like a one trick pony. I suggest we ignore him from now on. He doesn't offer any proof of what he says and he is insulting to everyone on here.

The only Hispanic candidate I can recall anyone being strongly against on here has been Marty Chavez-for good reasons. Nothing to do with Marty's ethnicity just what he has done in his campaigning and in office-fair game.

The commenter above also seems to think everyone who comments on here is a member of the organization which is not true either. I also wish he or she would learn to use grammar and spelling because it might make the comments make some sense anyway.

I am Hispanic and I vote for the person who will back my values, not just becuse he is Hispainc. That guy has no way to twist the facts about Chavez, so they have to resort to the race card. They cannot fight the truth. Wait till the voters down south hear about the red light scams.
If telling the truth is racist, then this guy has more problems then Marty.
